“You can take the girl out of Holland but you can’t take Holland out of the girl”
Home can be anywhere.
I had the privilege to live, study & work in some of the most amazing countries.
Every country was home.
I left my beloved Holland when I was 17 & considering I am 47 now it’s easy to do the math. I lived more years abroad than I ever lived in my own country.
Still, Holland is home.
I need that Dutch fix at least a couple of times a year. I need to wander the streets of Amsterdam & breathe the air of “doe maar gewoon, dan doe je al gek genoeg”. I need to drink “koffie verkeerd” in “de 9 straatjes”, eat my fries with mayonnaise at Vleminckx in de Voetboogstraat & sit on the stairs of other people’s houses. I need the Jordaan & its colourful people, its cafes & markets and I need to hear the “Hee Mop wat mag het wezen vandaag” I need my “broodje halfom” at Sal Meijer’s in the Scheldestraat & I need to bike & feel like I still fit in, but most of all I need “gezelligheid”
I drive my friends in Italy crazy when we are deciding in what restaurant to have dinner or where to go for an “aperitivo” my requisite always stands strong “wherever it is “gezellig”
You can find it in Italy but in Holland it’s just in the air…
